Breathing correctly can make your training sessions all the more successful and enjoyable. To make sure you're breathing the right way, follow the tips below.

How to Breathe While Working Out

First of all, you actually need to breathe. Sometimes, when making a great physical effort, people forget to breathe. If you're one of them, remind yourself to breathe while training.

Expand Your Belly

Shallow breaths won't do you much good. To really oxygenate the body while working out, you need to take deep breaths in during which you expand and contract your belly, to take as much air in as possible.

Breathe Accordingly

Different types of exercise require different types of breaths to sustain the kind of movements and demands. To adapt your breath to your training, follow these tips:
  • During cardio, find a rhythm in which you tie your movement to your breath. As an example, when you jog, inhale for four steps, hold for four, and exhale for four.
  • Depending on the sport you play, you will also need certain breathing techniques. When swimming, obviously inhale when your head is out of the water. With football, exhale before being tackled, so the wind won't get knocked out of you.
  • If you train with weights, you can use your breath to keep you going. Breathe in as you do the easiest part of the movement, and breathe out when you need to make more effort to get that extra push.
  • Of course, you need to stretch after working out to prevent injuries. Be even more aware of your breaths and about bringing as much air as you can to your lungs. This will also help you improve your flexibility.
